Update: According to TomTom, the information given on the UK Apple store was incorrect. The app will not be made available alongside the car kit and will in fact need to be purchased separately. So rather than paying £100 for the car kit and app you’ll need to pay £160, which we think is very expensive.

There’s no need to Sellotape your iPhone to a dashboard anymore. Thanks to a tweet from Mark Owen this morning, we’ve found out that the TomTom car kit for the iPhone 3GS is now available to pre-order (the page has been taken down) from the UK Apple store for £100 and it will ship in two to three weeks. The store description says, “You get both the TomTom navigation app for your iPhone 3GS or 3G and the docking kit to hold your iPhone securely in place on your dashboard or windscreen.” — so it costs £100 for everything, which isn’t too bad.
The car kit lets you secure the iPhone securely to your windscreen and contains a built-in GPS receiver so that you get a more reliable signal. There’s also a built-in microphone and speaker so that you can hear directions a lot better and take hands-free calls, and the option to connect your iPhone to your car stereo using an audio cable. The TomTom car kit only works with the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. For more information watch the official TomTom iPhone car kit video below.
