Just after Apple released the iPhone OS 3.1.2 update for iPhone OS based devices, George Hotz aka Geohot announced Blackra1n jailbreak. Accessible at the website http://blackra1n.com, it can be used with all iPhone OS based devices. However, for new iPod Touch third generation, which is jailbreakable but in tethered mode – one has to jailbreak every time third-gen iPod Touch is rebooted.

Geohot notes that blackra1n works on all devices with minimum iPhone OS 3.0 running and doesn’t activate/unlock the carrier for iPhone. For the latest iPod Touch, tethered jailbreak could be performed. This means you’ll have to jailbreak every time you boot the iPod Touch.

So, it’s better to wait for word from iPhone-Dev team. The infamous iPhone-Dev team cautioned iPhone jailbreak and unlock users to stay away from iPhone OS 3.1.2 update. At the moment, PwnageTool and redsn0w programs aren’t compatible with 3.1.2 update.

The iPhone-Dev team also notes that Blackra1n is not a carrier unlock method but only jailbreak tool. So, the iPhone 3G and 3GS owners using ultrasn0w to for carrier unlock are advised to stay away. Updating iPhone with 3.1 or 3.1.2 without using PwnageTool will bar the ability to unlock the device for quite a while.

Note that performing jailbreak and unlock voids the Apple Warranty on the respective device. This article is for informational purpose only and we aren’t responsible if the device turns non-responsive
