Since 29th June 2007, the historic day on which Apple launched their first iPhone(iPhone 2G),  and the subsequent release of  two more models iPhone 3G and 3GS in 2008 and 2009 respectively, Apple tried to improve the product by adding more and more features  to it.  Apple succeeded in incorporating three basic features in their phone, as a phone, as a multimedia device  and  as the, most compact and portable web browsing device. The three models and three years of experience in this field, is not a big time to  test  a product.  But  people expect some more in the next version as it belongs to Apple.

Our study among the iPhone users who were using an iPhone for the last two years reveals some common suggestions and improvements. We can classify the improvements under three heads,

  1. iPhone as a phone.
  2. iPhone as a multimedia device.
  3. iPhone as a web browsing device.

Improvements recommended to iPhone as a phone.

  1. Ringtone sound. The ring tone sound of iPhone is so feeble that it is very hard to hear the alert of an incoming call in a noisy atmosphere.  We admit the intension of Apple to keep their phone from sound pollution.  But if the phone has a ringtone sound level adjuster which is available in other brands, the users can adjust the ringtone sound to suit the situation.
  2. Notifications. A major complaint of majority users of  iPhone is that, Apple often neglect the fact that this is a phone.  If there is a new message, there is no visible message notification alert, rather than a small icon. More over for multiple new messages in the inbox, there is no proper notification. Same is the case for meeting and task alerts, e mails and missed calls.  These notifications are much user friendly in competitors phones (Eg. HTC hero).  Suggestion is that all the messages, Missed calls, meeting and task alerts and emails received in the iPhone should be notified in the home screen and are easily accessible.
  3. Contacts.  iPhone has the feature to import sim contacts to the phone, but exporting contacts from the phone to sim is not available.
  4. Appearance. The new iPhone 3GS has the same appearance as its predecessors. Though the design of iPhone is well appreciated, the lack of design change is a turn-down at least for some who prefer some facelift.
  5. Battery life. Despite the upgrade, battery life is still generally poor. Non removable battery also is a matter for some.
  6. External storage device.  iPhone can’t be used as an external storage device even though it is having a storage capacity up to 32 GB(3GS).
  7. Completely tied to iTunes. If you connect your iPhone to your friend’s iTunes, you risk erasing everything on your phone  is a dealbreaker.

Improvements recommended to iPhone  as a multimedia device.

  1. Speaker volume. The external speaker volume is not up to the mark.  Since the phone contains volume level adjuster the speaker can have better volume than now.
  2. Speaker quality. As iPhone is a substitute to iPod touch, useres expect better speaker quality.  But it at present  is not good enough to extract the full potential of the multimedia feature of the iPhone.  This is a complaint raised against iPod Touch also. It is high time to incorporate stereo speakers in iPhones and iPods.
  3. Head set quality. As iPhone is a substitute to iPod, users expect a better head set than what is available now.  Even a head set costing around $15 (Creative EP- 630) proves  much better.  Replacing with an In-ear head set will be a great boost to the multimedia feature of the iPhone as well as iPod.
  4. Bluetooth. The Bluetooth available with iPhone now can only used for communicating with an iphone or for connecting a Bluetooth head set. It cannot share mp3, images, videos or files via Bluetooth.  Like other brands, the Bluetooth of  iPhone should have the feature to receive and send data’s from any device having Bluetooth facility.
  5. Flash. There’s still nobuilt in  flash or hardware shutter key for the camera
  6. No FM Radio.

Improvements recommended to iPhone as a web browsing device.

  1. Video conferencing. Since iPhone is a device having 3G connectivity, users expect video conferencing facility in iPhone.   At present absence of a secondary camera in the front side of the iPhone is a barrier to that. Fixing a camera in the front side can solve the issue.
  2. Flash content support. The web browser Safari in iPhone is a great experience.  But it lack Flash content support to view flash enabled sites.  Enabling flash content support to Safari makes it more valuable  and open many opportunities for developers.

These are just some of the feedbacks from the users who actually experienced the positives and negatives of the iPhone.  So when they appreciate this product, there suggestions are also to be valued. To conclude, if Apple feels that these suggestions are valuable, we hope the next version of iPhone will have some of these changes, to make the iPhone more user friendly and price worthy.
