There was no shortage of MMi readers who predicted what FaceTime would evolve (or devolve) into for some users immediately following Steve Jobs’ introduction of the hot new feature of the iPhone 4. Well, that hot feature just got a whole lot “hotter,” if I may use the words of others to describe an entirely new industry begotten of the iPhone 4′s video conferencing capabilities.

CultofMac is reporting that the first adult video chat service to utilize FaceTime has arrived. iP4play.com, as you can imagine, is hoping to make a pretty penny by serving up “the hottest Video Chat models from the sexy girl next door to Penthouse’s finest.” The company reportedly started advertising for these “models” on Craigslist just a few weeks after the iPhone 4 began reaching consumers.

Needless to say, there are plenty of folks upset about the arrival of this “service” on such a prominent Apple platform. Nonetheless, iP4play.com is moving full steam ahead with a business model they believe will make bank. Calls start at $4.00/minute with chunks of time being available in 5, 10, 20 or 30 minute segments. Calls cannot be charged to your wireless bill and instead require a Visa or MasterCard.

If successful, this could be the start of a whole new third party iPhone industry. I’ll leave it to our astute MMi readers and contributors to weigh any pros and cons to that likely eventuality.

You’ve got SMS messages on there, emails, photos, videos, calendar entries – and a whole load of other private information you rather not have examined.

However, thanks to the magic of jailbreaking, there is now a solution. And, that solution is aptly called Locktopus: a piece of software that password protects your apps.

Available now in Cydia for $2, Locktopus is compatible with iOS 3.x right up to 4.0.1. Once you’ve got the software installed on your jailbroken iPhone, locking up your apps couldn’t be simpler. All users have to do is enter edit (“wiggly”) mode on their iPhone, and tap the bottom-left corner of the application while it’s jiggling around. A red lock will appear, meaning that the app is now password protected.

There are 100 million iDevice users in the world. The U.S. Copyright Office Monday had a huge ruling for the jailbreak community, and in fact all iDevice users and developers - officially declaring jailbreak legal. Of course – there’s still work to be done. Monday’s ruling was a solid first step, but the road to an open mobile app market has some asphalt left to traverse.

The mobile app market is dominated by the iPhone. The Android market is estimated to do only 10% of the App Store’s 2010 income. There are a few smatterings of mobile app stores (huh? what’s a Pre?), but nothing coming close to Apple’s share and position. If you want innovative, easy to use, cool apps – you need an iPhone. It’s where the talent has set up shop.

Here’s the thing – Monday says jailbreaking is legal. But with each firmware Apple breaks the jailbreak solution, erases jailbreakers’ installed apps, and makes it more difficult to jailbreak the next firmware. New hardware checks in the iPhone 3G[S] and iPhone 4 are great examples of this continued anti-competitive behavior. Now – the jailbreak is obviously exploiting a security hole, so Apple is within their rights (and arguably within their RESPONSIBILITY) to patch these holes. The ultimate goal? No need for a jailbreak – being able to, say, install Cydia or Rock simply by dragging it into iTunes.

For the last three years there have been many rumors that the iPhone will eventually be available on Verizon’s network. Apple has Verizon cell-sites in its Cupertino HQ, it has CDMA iPhone prototypes, and most of all, it has the will. Yet, it just hasn’t happened so far. There are some plausible explanations, but we really don’t know why for sure.

However, Verizon is not the only other American wireless carrier that could be carrying the iPhone soon. According to Cult of the Mac’s high-placed source at T-Mobile:

“Talks between Apple and T-Mobile are at an advanced stage, our source says, and it’s 80 percent likely that the iPhone will be coming to T-Mobile in Q3.”

Apple refused to confirm or deny the report, and a T-Mobile rep simply said that “T-Mobile does not comment on rumor or speculation.”

Let’s hope for the best!

Comex, the mastermind behind the Spirit jailbreak, has announced via Twitter that he will not be waiting for Apple’s upcoming iOS 4.1 update – and that a suitable tool should be released within days. It will support iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) on firmware 4.0 and hopefully 4.0.1!

Many had speculated that hackers would hold off on releasing a jailbreak tool until Apple pushed out its upcoming software update, which might conflict with jailbroken iPhone 4 handsets. However, Comex seems assured that there will be some way around whatever measures Apple attempts to enforce in iOS 4.1 – and if past experience is anything to go by, he’s right.

The iPhone Dev Team has just posted that Apple started Doing “Soft” SHSH Blobs Check Starting from iOS 4, This means that like the 3GS and the iPhone 4, if iTunes can’t get your blobs (due to signing window being closed), the iTunes restore will error out.

The iPhone dev-team’s blog post :

Those of you with jailbroken iPhone3G and ipt2G devices may now have noticed Cydia starting to save your SHSH blobs too, just like it does for iPhone3GS, ipt3G and later devices. That’s because starting with 4.0, Apple started putting a “soft” SHSH blob check in the firmware. The SHSH blob check is very real in the sense that if iTunes can’t get your blobs (because the Apple signing window has closed), the iTunes restore will error out. But it’s “soft” in the sense that those devices can always use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get past the error (the bootroms themselves for those devices don’t require blobs to be in the firmware files, unlike the newer bootroms).

Furthermore, since the 3.x IPSWs for these devices don’t enforce it, you can always restore to 3.x IPSWs outside of any signing windows.

So, Cydia is doing this to allow you to continue to use iTunes to restore to 4.x on iPhone3G and ipt2g outside of Apple’s signing window without needing to use redsn0w or PwnageTool to get around Apple’s annoying new restriction.
