Google unveiled the Gesture Search app, that allows android users to search for contacts, bookmarks, apps, music by drawing simple gestures on the screen. Gesture Search, announced March 3, can only be used on devices running Android 2.0 or higher ( I tested it on a HTC hero running firmware 2.1), which restricts the number of devices that have access to it. After using it on my phone, I found it very comfortable and useful, though it’s a little slow on my device. The app allows us to quickly search through the phone. All the contents are indexed first to make the search more faster. Many users want it to be bundled with the oncoming android devices. Want to try it out yourself ? Go to Android market and search for “Gesture Search”…!

One of the latest BlackBerry smartphones to hit the market finally got its first taste of the latest update for OS 5.0 thanks to a leaked update that’s been finally made available for download. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 really managed to turn up the notch for the veteran smartphone maker with its sleek form factor and peppy speeds, but the Bold 9700 is getting treated to the OS 5.0.0.536 leak which brings forth a small amount of improvements. Owners can expect to see the caller ID issue fixed, no lock icon unless you have a password, the lock function is different, and browsing the internet looks to be a bit faster. Although it’s not a huge difference in terms of what’s experienced previously, it points to a telling sign that hopefully an official update will be made in the near future. So if you’ve got some time on your hands and want to take a risk in placing your Bold 9700 into the latest version, then you can give it a shot by installing the leaked update.

After chiming in on Steve Job’s keynote for the Apple iPad, a long time Swedish Apple fan going by the name of Jezper Söderlund sent Apple’s biggest genius a question. Aside from just flat out asking whether the Wi-Fi only version of the iPad will support tethering through the iPhone, Jezper didn’t waste much words in describing his affinity to obtain the answer to that question. Not only does he consider himself a famous DJ in his own right, the longtime Swede even provided some insights to his liking for Apple products as he is in the process of replacing his last computer at home with a new iMac i7. As with any email sent to Steve Jobs, there’s that slight possibility of getting back a reply – especially when he probably goes through hundreds or even thousands of emails per day from co-workers, employees, friends, and anyone in between. Jobs provided a rather simple and definitive answer to Jezper’s valid question – “No.” So there you have it, the two lettered word sent back to Jezper by Steve Jobs on his 3.1.2 iPhone pretty much seals it for that.

Just a week after Apple released the iPhone 3.1.3 update, Sherif Hashim has discovered an exploit that could allow iPhone users to unlock their iPhone on the iPhone 3.1.3 firmware on baseband 05.12.01 and use it with other carriers like T-Mobile in the US, for example. We get these a lot, but no the iPhone can’t be unlocked to work with Verizon because Verizon operates on a CDMA network. Apple always updates the baseband with each update, causing many iPhone users to loose their unlock so this is good news for the iPhone users that had their baseband updated and lost their unlock.

For now, download our iPhone Web App and you’ll receive an alert once the unlock is released, and instructions on how to install it.

The exploit Sherif Hashim uses has not been revealed yet, but iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd has confirmed that it works. The iPhone Dev Team will most likely wait for Apple to release the next generation iPhone 4G before releasing this unlock so that Apple does not patch the exploit before then. For now, all iPhone users that are unlocked/jailbroken are advised to be extremely cautious of future firmware updates and avoid updating before the jailbreak tools are updated.

On Wednesday morning an unknown number of thieves managed to break in to a Best Buy in South Brunswick, New Jersey and steal 20 notebooks valued at $26,000. For the record, these were all MacBooks so no Windows computers were stolen (phew!). These thieves were clever because they were able to avoid cameras, motion sensors, and alarms.

Police believe the thieves broke in to the Best Buy by cutting a hole through the roof using a saw, and slicing a 3-foot wide square in the metal roof. Detective James Ryan said that there was a “high level of sophistication” involved in this robbery since the thieves didn’t set off any alarms or motion detectors, and were also able to avoid cameras. John Harris, a security expert said “I would say they were a professional crew”, and “At least I’ve never dealt with anything like this. From time to time, people break in, but not usually through the roof.” Police are still investigating, and they think that at least 2 or 3 people were involved in this roberry and they may have hit other locations before as well.

Here’s some good news for Android users. Swype has just launched a beta program for the Google Android platform. The new beta requires users to make an account with the company. It downloads on the Android device and users can install it from there.

The Swype beta for Android is capped at a limited number of registrants. To notify, this particular version will expire after three months as the company will provide periodic updated versions that will include new features and functionality.

The new software
supports phones with HVGA and WVGA resolutions and features built-in dictionaries for English and Spanish.

The new Swype beta is open to all phones using Android which do not already have Swype pre-installed by the phone manufacturer/carrier. Users are advised if they have Swype pre-installed on their mobile device then do not attempt to install this beta software.

Users can register with an email address they can access via their mobile and Swype will send a link to download Swype beta software. That’s it!

HTC has issued an official statement denying all allegations that were slapped on its face by Apple’s patents infringement suit. HTC’s official statement appeared on the Taiwan Stock Exchange website but has been pulled off now. The company stated, “We will closely cooperate with US justice system in the case to protect our own innovative values and rights.”

This wasn’t the first time where Apple has sparked a legal battle against HTC. Back In 2007, Apple and HTC stood against each other for Trademark tangle over the word ‘Touch’. And now, Apple has filed a suit against HTC for infringing 20 iPhone related UI, underlying architecture and hardware patents. HTC started disaster management with an official statement – HTC is a mobile technology innovator and patent holder that has been very focused over the past 13 years on creating many of the most innovative smartphones.

HTC added that this lawsuit will have no major impact on its operations in the short term. What is new here is that Internet giant Google backed HTC through an officially issued statement saying, “We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.” Google Nexus One is one of the many Android OS clad HTC devices that is a proof of Google-HTC partnership. Hence, despite this being HTC’s battle, Google is actively supporting it since the Android OS is being questioned here.

Apparently, HTC had plans to launch Google Chrome OS based Tablet but got those plans shelved citing they wanted to focus more on handset production. But that doesn’t mean it won’t happen ever. Apple might have anticipated the level of competition in that segment as well. However, this legal battle between Apple and HTC is serious and would certainly continue for a long time.

Google may launch a more affordable version of its Nexus One smartphone with less features to attract users from emerging economies like India and Russia.

After an short interview (or editorial meeting) with the Managing Director of Google India, Shailesh Rao and Gaurav Bhaskar, Global Communications & Public Affairs Manager at Google India, Ankit Vengurlekar, Anchor and Producer at CNBC TV In India, wrote on his Twitter account that “Nexus One will not come to India in its US avatar, the India specific Google Phone may be a stripped down version and priced lower!”

The original Nexus One phone is available in the US for $529 excluding delivery and value added Tax and it would be interesting to see whether Google keeps the same moniker, Nexus One, for that version or adopts a new one like Nexus One Micro (or mini, like the N97 Mini).

More interestingly, we’d be quite intrigued to know if the model will be launched in India only or whether it will be available to other more mature markets.

Based on previous “downsizing” exercises, one can expect that the prospective Nexus One Micro will have a smaller screen, less memory, a blander box and possibly a less capable processor.

(Thanks to Amit from Labnol for the headsup)
