The Samsung GALAXY S III features a large 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED display, an 8MP camera and a 1.9MP front camera, and runs Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Video review

Specs

The 4.8-inch display is a Super AMOLED panel with 720 x 1280 (306ppi) resolution, and inserted just above that display? Why, it’s a 1.9MP forward-facing camera which shoots 720p video. Over on the Galaxy S III’s backside, it’s got a simple 8MP camera that can shoot 1080p video. But don’t let that lowly sensor number put you off – Samsung’s got a few camera tricks in store this time, which I’ll touch on in a minute.

Running on one of Samsung’s beastly new 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Cortex-A9 quad-core chips, it comes with 1GB of RAM, and a choice of either 16, 32 or 64GB internal storage configurations (all of which also let you chuck a microSD card up to 64GB in, as well.)

In certain territories (the US, Japan and Korea), the S III will be available in LTE, but we’ll have to make do with HSPA+ here in the UK.

Seven sensors, including an accelerometer; RGB light; digital compass; proximity; gryoscope; NFC, and barometer have been shoved in too.

All of this in a body that weighs 133grams, measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm, and houses a 2100mAh battery; Samsung’s first smartphone with a battery that size.

New features :

- Smart Stay, which uses the forward-facing camera to determine if you’re looking at the phone. You can set time intervals from as little as 15 seconds, which result in a small flashing eye logo in the Android notification bar. If it recognises that your eyes aren’t focused on the phone anymore, the screen dims.

- Direct Call, which will auto-dial a contact if you have their contact details or a message open. By moving the phone to your ear, the proximity sensor; accelerometer and gyroscope all kick into use, and automatically dial the contact’s number.

- Smart Alert, which will make the phone vibrate in your hand and flash an LED if you pick the phone up after a missed call.

- S Voice, which is a Siri-like voice recognition feature, that you can use to enquire about the weather; take a photo (“Hi Galaxy, please take a photo” to open the camera app, or “cheese” to snap it), and other tasks such as locking the phone, or controlling music. Each demand can be configured by the user.

- Social Tag, which links photos of friends in your photo gallery to their Facebook or Google+ accounts, using facial recognition.

- S Beam, which pairs other Galaxy S III phones (and only them, for now) via NFC, shares photos, videos, files or even albums of media over Wi-Fi. If your friend’s S III doesn’t have Wi-Fi enabled, S Beam will automatically turn that user’s Wi-Fi on, and then off.

- AllShare Cast, which pairs to TVs, laptops or tablets over Wi-Fi, mirroring whatever’s on the S III. You can also use the S III as a game controller.

- PopUp Play, which will literally pop a video out of its player, rendering it in a small thumbnail so you can continue watching while surfing the web or doing other functions on the phone. The thumbnail is movable around the display, even if it’s pretty small.

Peter Hajas has announced a new beta of MobileNotifier, an open source notifications manager for iOS. Probably the biggest feature in this release is the addition of new alerts. These alerts – designed by Kyle Adams – are easy on the eyes, animate cleanly, and show the app icon. They’re just like they should be – unobtrusive and user-respecting.

AlertDashboard allows you to view your pending alerts, and either remove them or take action on them. It’s really smooth and slick, and I think you’re going to love it.

MobileNotifier now has a handy lockscreen view, showing you the number of pending notifications in an unobtrusive way.

MobileNotifier Beta 3 Changelog:

New alerts

AlertDashboard

Lockscreen View

Full push notification support

Completely reworked MNAlertManager, considerably more intelligent

Time encoding support with each alert

Numerous usability improvements

Bug fixes relating to 3.x compatibility, alert display and other internal aspects of the utility

and more! The commit log on GitHub is the best place to see all the iterative changes.

You can get MobileNotifier from the http://phajas.xen.prgmr.com/repo Cydia repository.

The iPhone 5 will get a complete redesign, the iPad will get a Retina Display, and the Apple TV will get 1080p video, according to an Engadget report. The site claims to have concrete information from reliable sources about the upcoming devices.

iPad 2, The display will sport a new technology similar to the Retina Display and be “super high resolution”. It will get front and rear cameras, and feature an SD slot. “In fact, see that weird notch in the photo below? That’s where the SD part will be located.” The new iPad will also feature a dual GSM / CDMA chipset produced by Qualcomm.

iPhone 5, Engadget’s sources report that the iPhone 5 will be a completely redesigned handset and will launch this summer. It is already being tested by senior Apple staff on campus only. It is said to be running a new A5 CPU and will also sport a Qualcomm chipset “does triple duty as the CDMA / GSM / UMTS baseband processor — from what we hear there’s no LTE in the mix at this point.”

Apple TV, Apple is also said to be working on a next generation Apple TV that will feature the new A5 processor as well. “The CPU is said to be blazingly fast, cranking out 1080p video ‘like running water.’ It’s likely that the A5 will make it into the iPad 2 as well, but we have yet to confirm that”

UPDATE 2 : Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 now available. This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 for Mac OS X

UPDATE 1 : iPhone Dev Team has just released the second beta of Redsn0w 0.9.7 to convert tethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 to untethered on new-generation iOS devices. The second beta is still for testing only so stay away if you rely on your device or care for an unlock.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 for Mac OS X

The iPhone Dev Team has released the necessary jailbreak tools which can untether the latest iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak on iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G, and iPad. Old-generation iOS devices already have untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1. The updates Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 brings untethered jailbreak for those devices on iOS 4.2.1.

Below is the full step-by-step guide to jailbreak your iOS device using Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 and get untethered jailbreak immediately.

STEP 1: First of all, you have to jailbreak your iOS 4.2.1 device using Redsn0w by following the step by step instructions posted here.

STEP 2: Once jailbroken, tap on Cydia and check if your 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved or not. You should see “SHSH: 4.2b3″ in the status.

STEP 3: Now download Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 from the links given below and connect your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

STEP 4: Since this is a beta release, you must have usbmuxd that can be download from here. Now start terminal in python-client directory then type in the following commands:

chmod +x tcprelay.py

./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222

STEP 5: Now start Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 and point it to the official iOS 4.2.1 .IPSW file.

STEP 6: In the next page, check on Jailbreak Monte which untethers your iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak then point it to iOS 4.2 beta 3 firmware.

STEP 7: Final step is to put your iOS device in DFU Mode using Redsn0w instructions on the screen.

Finally, sit back and let Redsn0w go in bunch of steps and you’ll finally get untethered jailbreak on your new-generation iOS device.

Please note that this is a beta release, and upcoming versions will bring support for Windows users and will have built-in usbmuxd for easy process.
