Apple is now selling unlocked iPhone 4 handsets in North America. The handsets are available to purchase for $649 (16 gigabyte) and $749 (32 gigabyte) respectively.

As outlined by Apple in the handsets’ description:

Get all the features of iPhone 4 — FaceTime video calling, Retina display, HD video recording, and more — in a phone that you can activate and use on the supported GSM wireless carrier of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States.1

If you don’t want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice. It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you’ll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide.

337 days following the handset’s initial release in North America, Apple is finally introducing the iPhone 4 in India.

As you can see, Indian Apple fans have the ability to purchase an iPhone 4 “practically for free,” and can receive 100 percent of the handset’s price (Rs. 34,500 for the 16GB model and Rs. 40,900 for the 32GB model) back in monthly credits, over the course of a year – providing they pay for the iPhone 4 in full upfront.

Telecom operators Bharti airtel and Aircel today said they will start selling Apple’s iPhone 4 in India from May 27. According to Aircel :

Following an upfront payment of Rs. 34,500 for the 16GB model and Rs. 40,900 for the 32GB model, customers will have the opportunity to recover 100 percent of their upfront iPhone cost in monthly credits on their service plan over a period of 24 months.

“With a robust roll out of Aircel’s 3G services in 13 circles across India, the launch of iPhone 4 will allow our consumers to truly savour the 3G experience,” Aircel Director Sandip Das said in a statement.

“With our incredible new price plans, we aim to make iPhone more affordable than ever,” Das said.

As you can see in the demo video below, the jailbreak package promises to bring “biometric facial recognition security” to the iPhone 4. This means that users will be able to configure the handset to scan their own face in order to unlock the iPhone. Furthermore, it will be possible to adjust exactly “how sure” you want the app to be, in order to go ahead with the unlock (this ranges from “Not Secure” to “Very Secure”).

RecognizeMe is now available in Cydia for download for $6.99 via the BigBoss repository.

Gevey SIM for iPhone 4 basically works by forcing the activation of the baseband using the emergency dialer, and it is also said to be vulnerable up to iOS 4.3. It is advised that you wait for a legal iPhone 4 unlock from the iPhone Dev Team which will be possible soon thanks to the 40-bit NCK exploit for iPhone 4.

Members of Chronic Dev Team has just released Greenpois0n RC5.4 for Mac OS X that allows you to jailbreak Verizon iPhone 4 for life. The team has posted an image of jailbroken CDMA iPhone on Verizon network which clearly shows Cydia running on it.

Follow the below guide for step by step instructions to convert your tethered jailbreak to untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1:

STEP 1: Your device must be on iOS 4.2.x, then download GreenPois0n RC5 for Mac OS X from here. [Mirror]

STEP 2: Launch GreenPois0n RC5 then connect your iPhone into your Mac via USB and click onJailbreak as shown below:

STEP 3: Follow the instructions shown on the screen to enter DFU mode:

STEP 4: After the jailbreak is done, you will have a new application on your springboard called Loader. Use it to install Cydia, then it will ask you if you want to remove it. A quick re-spring, and you now have Cydia.

Download Greenpois0n RC5.4 for Mac OS X
Download iOS 4.2.6 for Verizon iPhone 4

While performing tests on the new Verizon iPhone 4, iLounge discovered that it suffers from the ‘Death Grip’ as well as the ‘Death Hug’.

The CDMA iPhone 4 can still lose substantial cellular signal strength when held in the prior “death grip” position, as well as Wi-Fi signal when held in a different position, in each case noticeably slowing or completely stalling the reception of data.

The problem with Wi-Fi reception appears when the device is held snugly in landscape orientation with two hands, a position common when playing games or using the widescreen keyboard. Prior to the Verizon iPhone 4′s launch, sources told iLounge to be on the lookout for the issue, which was being referred to as the “death hug.”

You watch these grips being demonstrated in the video below…

Starting now, everyone can pre-order the new device on both Apple’s and Verizon’ssite, for either delivery or pick-up. Unfortunately, deliveries seem to be scheduled to start the 18th so you’ll probably be better off if you decide to reserve and pick it up in-store tomorrow. Alternatively, you could simply not reserve and try your luck by walking into an Apple Retail Store starting at 7:00 a.m.

The Verizon iPhone 4 will cost $50 more than the AT&T iPhone 4 when purchased off contract, according to a 9to5Mac report.

AT&T allows customers to purchase the 16 GB iPhone 4 for $599 sans the contract and charges $699 for the contract-free 32 GB model. On the other hand, Verizon charges $649 and $749 for the two models, respectively.

It’s unclear if this difference is due to the CDMA hardware or just a premium for the new device.
