Cydia 1.1 is finally upon us and it’s packed with AWESOME! An update which has been discussed for months, and a topic that users have thought about almost every day. This update adds even more functionality behind the scenes, which will allow Saurik to provide even more updates to Cydia, quicker and easier than ever before.

Saurik just announced it’s release via Twitter, saying: Cydia 1.1: faster, slimmer, and more stable; including an improved search algorithm and “resume where you left off”. Available in Cydia now!

From the screenshots, it looks like 4 or 5 fingers gestures are the same as the iPad in the first beta of iOS 4.3. Apple’s willing to remove home button from next generation devices, Engadget thinks that the iPhone 4 could have a bigger screen or it could just be placeholder text from iPad and less fingers will be required if it goes prime time.

iOS 4.3 brings many new features to iPhone and iPad, Let’s have a look at the important ones.

Personal Hotspot to all iPhones. Apple has pushed personal hotspot feature to all iPhones on iOS 4.3 but it’ll work like tethering on AT&T, likely with those fun-time data caps. No word on AT&T yet.

New Multi-touch Gestures to iPad:

iOS 4.3 brings new multi-touch gestures to the iPad. The new four and five finger gestures makes movement much easier, quicker and better; pinch to the home screen, swipe up to reveal multitasking tray, swipe left/right to switch apps.

(via Gizmodo)

New Camera Effects
As noted by iSpazio, iOS 4.3 beta 1 firmware files hints at some references to new effect in the Camera app. The effects are; Thermal Camera, X-ray, Kaleidoscope, Normal, Tunnel of Light, Collapse, Turbine, and Enlarge.

New FaceTime Icon, Full Screen iAds

As reported by 9to5mac, iOS 4.3 brings a groovy, new FaceTime icon (above) as well as a new full-screen iAd banners and adds Airplay and Apple TV services (not apps on Apple TV — yet) for apps.

iPhone 3G and iPod touch Support Drop

As we reported, iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G have been discontinued as of iOS 4.3. Both of the devices are not listed anymore on the iOS developer website. This indicates that the latest iOS build for iPhone 3G and iPod touch may be iOS 4.2.1.

Samsung will be revealing a new Android-based Galaxy Player that will be showcased next week at the CES 2011. The Galaxy player was inspired by the success of Samsung Galaxy phone, they both resemble a lot in physical apperance as well as hardware specs. I believe that the Galaxy player would be the first portable media player, that can compete against the Apple’s iPod Touch, both the devices are having a really powerful hardware which is supported by two terrific mobile operating systems, the Apple iOS and the Google Android. Out of the box, Android and iOS, both features a lot more than just a Media Player, it now supports millions of everyday applications, Navigation, Media Sharing, Communication and lot more… It a lot more than just a thing that plays music!

Let’s have a look at the specs:

The Galaxy Player (YP-GB1) runs on Android 2.2 Froyo (They could have made it Android 2.3 Gingerbread ) OS.

It has a 1GHz CPU same as that of the iPod touch which has the Apple A4 with 1GHz processor.

4-inch Super Clear LCD screen supporting up to WVGA resolution (800×480) while the iPod touch features an awesome 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch Retina display capable of 960-by-640-pixel resolution at 326 pixels per inch.

T-DMB, SoundAlive audio enhancing technology

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0

3.2MP rear camera with front facing camera for video calling, iPod touch has a camera with HD Video recording (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still photos (960 x 720) with back camera and a VGA front camera for facetime.

GPS, HD video playback, microSD card slot, Android Market and Samsung Apps access and a 1200mAh removable battery.

I would say that the Samsung Galaxy Player is an awesome contender for the iPod touch, and having Android OS make it even more better!

Here is the promo video of the other Galaxy Player ( YP-G50) :

UPDATE 2 : Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 now available. This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 for Mac OS X

UPDATE 1 : iPhone Dev Team has just released the second beta of Redsn0w 0.9.7 to convert tethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 to untethered on new-generation iOS devices. The second beta is still for testing only so stay away if you rely on your device or care for an unlock.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 for Mac OS X

The iPhone Dev Team has released the necessary jailbreak tools which can untether the latest iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak on iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G, and iPad. Old-generation iOS devices already have untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1. The updates Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 brings untethered jailbreak for those devices on iOS 4.2.1.

Below is the full step-by-step guide to jailbreak your iOS device using Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 and get untethered jailbreak immediately.

STEP 1: First of all, you have to jailbreak your iOS 4.2.1 device using Redsn0w by following the step by step instructions posted here.

STEP 2: Once jailbroken, tap on Cydia and check if your 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved or not. You should see “SHSH: 4.2b3″ in the status.

STEP 3: Now download Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 from the links given below and connect your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

STEP 4: Since this is a beta release, you must have usbmuxd that can be download from here. Now start terminal in python-client directory then type in the following commands:

chmod +x tcprelay.py

./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222

STEP 5: Now start Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 and point it to the official iOS 4.2.1 .IPSW file.

STEP 6: In the next page, check on Jailbreak Monte which untethers your iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak then point it to iOS 4.2 beta 3 firmware.

STEP 7: Final step is to put your iOS device in DFU Mode using Redsn0w instructions on the screen.

Finally, sit back and let Redsn0w go in bunch of steps and you’ll finally get untethered jailbreak on your new-generation iOS device.

Please note that this is a beta release, and upcoming versions will bring support for Windows users and will have built-in usbmuxd for easy process.

Download Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 for Mac OS X

Skype is preparing for a big surprise for iPhone and iPod touch users, according to Engadet, it appears that a new update is coming to Skype which allows the iPhone and iPod touch users to make a video chat with all Skype users even they were using a Skype desktop version.

How do I make video calls with Skype for iPhone?
The following questions and answers will help you get started with using Skype video calls on your iPhone.

To make video calls with your contacts, you will need an iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd generation iPod touch, 4th generation iPod touch or an iPad. Your contacts will only be able to see you if your device has a camera. Make sure your device is running iOS 4.0 or above and that you are using Skype for iPhone 3.0 or above.
The contacts you are calling must be using one of the following Skype clients:

* Skype for Windows version 4.2 and above
* Skype for Mac OS X version 2.8 and above
* Skype for iPhone 3.0 and above

You can make Skype video calls by using a WiFi or 3G connection*. The quality of the video will depend upon the available network conditions.
*Additional data charges may apply. Check with your operator for details.
If you have an iPhone or iPod touch with two cameras – front and rear – you will be able to switch between them during a Skype video call. If you have an iPhone 3GS it will always use the rear camera.
If you turn your device into landscape mode, the camera picture will automatically rotate.
In both portrait and landscape mode double tapping anywhere on your screen will zoom the picture to take up the full extent of the screen. Double tapping again will take the picture back to its normal size.
While on a Skype video call the sound will always be played through the loudspeaker, unless a headset is plugged into the device.
During a video call tap your screen to display the camera and microphone controls. Tap and hold down the microphone button to put the call on hold. To resume the call, simply tap thehold symbol on the screen.
Yes, at any time during a Skype video call you can choose to turn off the video. Tap theCamera button and select the No Cameraoption. To turn the video back on tap theCamera button again and then tap the camera you want to switch on.
When your iPhone is processing a lot of video its CPU (Central Processing Unit) has to work very hard and makes the iPhone become warm to the touch. You will experience the same thing if you stream videos through applications like Netflix or YouTube.
Yes, you will be able to receive screen shares from people using Skype for Windows or Mac OSX. You cannot share what is on the screen of your iPhone with other people and you cannot receive a screen share from another iPhone user.
No, you will be switched to audio only, as Skype for iPhone does not support group video calling.
The quality of the video you send and receive from your iPhone will depend upon the quality and bandwidth available on the WiFi or 3G network you are connected to. For best results, make sure you have nothing else running that might use up your bandwidth.

This tweak enables widescreen photos in the built-in Camera.app on the iPhone Touch 4G. It effectively adds more megapixels to the resulting photos, at the cost of losing the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio.

Because of that, this tweak also adds a button to the camera.app that toggles the tweak in case you would like to retain the original ratio. There are no icons installed for this item, and no settings to configure.

HD Photographer is available for $0.99 in Cydia Store via BigBoss repo.
